The Church Is… Session 5: The Church Is A Witness
Acts 1:8— “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
[Read Acts 1:6-11]
- When you think about Christian witnessing, what comes to mind? Do you think of witnessing in a positive or negative light?
- Before Jesus’ ascension, he commissioned His disciples to be witnesses. What does it mean to be a witness? What did Jesus mean?
- What does Matthew 28:19-20 say about being a witness for Christ?
- What does this mean for the church? Is the local church fulfilling the Great Commission? Is the church focused on being a witness for Christ?
- Whether we like it or not, every true believer, churchgoer, and anyone affiliated with Jesus is a witness of His name. Why do so many people struggle to share their faith in Christ? Why might it be a challenge for the church to come to agreements on evangelism philosophies and ideas? Do you agree that the Gospel is unchanging, but methods and philosophies change with culture and needs? Why?
- Acts 1:8 reminds us that believers in Jesus have been given power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us. What kind of power is this? Why is this critical to our witness?
- What do you believe is your role in the Great Commission? What spiritual gifts have you been given? How does your spiritual gifting relate to being a witness for Christ?
- Who are the people that God has placed in your life to share the gospel with? What questions could you prepare for a conversation with them? [Ex. Ask someone, “How can I pray for you?”]
- What are you doing in the present about it? Are you praying that the Holy Spirit would guide your relationships and direct you today? [Ex. Pray for someone by name, and ask God to work in their life and in your relationship with them.]
