What Would Jesus Say Session 17: Forgive Us Our Debts
Matthew 6:12 — “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”
[Read Matthew 6:12, 14-15]
- In Matthew 6:12, what two requests does Jesus teach us to pray for daily?
- What does it mean to pray, “Forgive us our debts”? Verses 14-15 use the term trespasses. What does that mean? How is sin a debt?
- We have all hurt someone, and we have all been hurt by someone. What is the significance of forgiveness? Give an example. Can you think of a time when you struggled to forgive someone for something that they did against you? What happened? How did you reconcile with each other? Are there people in your life that you have not forgiven? Why?
- Jesus teaches us to pray conditionally here? What is the condition? What do verses 14-15 say? What does this mean? Does God refuse to forgive us if we don’t forgive other people?
- Jesus explains the condition of the pray in Matthew 18:21-35. What does Jesus say? How does this apply to Matthew 6:12? What is this parable about? What was Jesus teaching His disciples?
- How should Jesus sacrifice on the cross inform the way we live our lives in the freedom of forgiveness and the forgiveness we show to others?
- How might this inform your life today? Are there relationships in your life that need forgiveness today?
- How might this help you reach forgiveness and reconciliation?
