What Would Jesus Say Session 15: Your Will Be Done

Matthew 6:10 — “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

[Read Matthew 6:9-13]

  1. How does Jesus teach us to pray in Matthew 6:9-13? Of all of the things Jesus could have said, why do you think Jesus taught us to pray this way? Is Jesus intent for us to copy the Lord’s Prayer or use it as a template?
  2. What are we praying when we say, ‘Your kingdom come, your will be done’? How might you describe God’s Kingdom? What does it mean that His kingdom would come?
  3. When we pray for God’s will to be done, what are we praying for?
  4. There are two aspects of God’s will that can help us define what we are praying for in the Lord’s prayer. God’s revealed and unrevealed will. Let’s define each. God’s revealed will are things like the Commandments, warnings, and judgements. God’s unrevealed will are things like, what do we do for work, who we will marry, where we will live. Can you give personal examples of God’s revealed and unrevealed will?
  5. How can we know God’s will? How might the Lord’s prayer help us understand His will for us?
  6. What does it mean to pray, ‘Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven’? Why is this important for us to understand?
  7. How might this study encourage you to pray today?
