What Would Jesus Say Session 13: What Jesus Said About Worship Motives

  • Matthew 6:1: How does the perfect righteousness of Jesus, which is credited to us by faith, liberate us from the anxiety of performing for human approval?
  • Matthew 6:1: Because we wrongly try to use our good works to look better to others, how does the Gospel message—that we are already fully accepted in Christ—change our motivation for doing good deeds?
  • Matthew 6:1: How does the definition of righteousness blow shape the way you think about “practicing righteousness” or acts of worship?
God’s Righteousness Our Righteousness
GOD ACTS for the glory of his Name. WE DO righteousness by acting for the glory of God’s Name.
GOD GIVES a person the status as someone who acts for the glory of His Name WE RECEIVE the status as a person who rightly acts for the glory of His Name.
GOD IS unswervingly committed to “always to act for the glory of his name.”1 WE ARE not righteous. (Rom. 3:10)
  • Matthew 6:4: We are promised that our Father, “who sees in secret,” will reward us. How does this assurance of a future reward from God provide more hope and stability than any applause we might receive in this life?
  • Matthew 6:4: If our “reward” is found in the Father’s gracious gifts, rather than in the opinions of others, how does this transform our daily interactions and service into acts of worship rather than acts of negotiation?
  • Matthew 6:6: By calling us to “go into your room and shut the door” to pray, Jesus invites us into intimate communion. How does the Gospel assure us that we can approach God privately as our Father, without needing to put on a mask?
  • Matthew 6:6: How does the knowledge that God is our Father who hears us in secret, because of Jesus, change prayer from a duty we perform to get something into a joyful response of relationship?
  • Matthew 6:6: What promises does God make that help you fight against glory-stealing motivations in worship?
