What Would Jesus Say Session 4: Blessed Are Those Who Hunger and Thirst
Matthew 5:6 — “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…”
[Read Matthew 5:1-6 / Romans 3:21-22]
- In the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches us what living for the Kingdom of God looks like here on earth. Why is this so important for us to understand? What does this mean?
- Jesus uses hunger and thirst as metaphors for seeking and desiring purity or righteous living. What do we tend to hunger and thirst for in our lives?
- Make a short list of temporary desires you have on an everyday basis. Make a short list of wants and impulses that you have on a daily basis that are unholy and unrighteous. How do good desires turn into unhealthy and unrighteous desires?
- What examples would you give if you were to describe a person who hungers for righteousness?
- Jesus is not telling us merely to ‘know’ what is right and true, but to desire and live it out. What’s the difference between knowing righteousness and hungering and thirsting for righteousness?
- What truly satisfies us in this life? How do we obtain satisfaction in this life?
- Romans 3:21-22 tells us that righteousness comes through faith in Jesus Christ. What does that mean? What does that mean for our lives today? How are we to apply this truth to Matthew 5:6?
- How has this lesson helped you understand what Jesus is teaching us in the Beatitudes?
