What Would Jesus Say Session 2: Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

 

Matthew 5:4 — “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Read Matthew 5:1-4

  1. The term ‘mourn’ in Matthew 5:4 refers to both grieving and lamenting. When was the last time you mourned? How have you coped with your grief? How has the comforting presence of God brought peace to your life?
  2. How are we taught to grieve and mourn in our culture? What cultural differences do you observe in the Scriptures?
  3. What happened in John 11:33-35 that caused Jesus to grieve? Why was Jesus so broken-hearted? What does this tell us about mourning?
  4. What happened in Luke 19:41-44 that caused Jesus to weep? What is Jesus prophesying about? How does this help us understand the heart of Jesus?
  5. What does it mean for us to mourn our sins and the sins of our world? How are we instructed in the Scriptures to lament after our sins?
  6. In our culture today, how would you describe our attitude towards sin?
  7. What does Psalm 62:8 command us to do? What does it mean to ‘pour your heart out’ to God? Why is this important?
  8. What has this study taught you about this beatitude? How might you apply it to your life? How can you encourage someone else with this verse in Matthew 5:4?
