Planted Session 4: How Do You See Yourself?
Romans 12:3 — “For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.”
[Read Romans 12:1-8]
- What does Romans 12:1-2 say about our mindset? What transformation occurs in the believer’s life as we grow and mature in faith?
- In verse 3, Paul instructs the church not to think more highly of themselves than we out to think. What does this mean? What is the context?
- Instead, we are to think with sober judgment. How should we define ‘sober judgement’? What is implied here? [Hint: exaggerating our point of view of our own opinions, gifts, and talents leads to pride and self-centeredness.] Can you give an example of how we might exaggerate our view of ourselves?
- What does Paul mean when he says we are given gifts according to the measure of faith that God has assigned? (v.3) What does this imply about how God gives each of us gifts? Why doesn’t God give us gifts evenly? What does verse 4 tell us?
- In verse 6, we are given this list of spiritual gifts: prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation, generosity, leadership, and mercy. How does Paul instruct us in each of these gifts? Why do you think the church at Rome needed these instructions?
- We do not earn spiritual gifts; instead, they are given to us by God. What does that tell us about how we are to steward our gifts? How might we bring glory to God through our gifts rather than bring attention to ourselves?
- Having spiritual gifts does not ensure spiritual maturity. How can we mature together using the gifts God has given us?
- Why is unity in the church so essential? Do we struggle with this? Why? How can we grow together in unity as a local church?
