History Session 17: Joseph and His Dreams
Genesis 37:3 — “Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors.”

- What do we learn about Joseph as we are introduced to him in Chapter 37? What do we learn about Joseph and his father Jacob? Why is there tension and division between Joseph and his brothers? What does this say about Jacob’s family?
- Every family has dysfunction. What does this story teach us about family dysfunction? Why is this important for us to consider in our own lives? What does the story of Joseph teach us about God’s provision and hope for our families? How does the story of Joseph point us to Jesus? [Share in detail]
- Why does the story of Joseph mention his coat of many colors? What does this represent?
- In verses 5-11, we are told of Joseph’s dreams. What did Joseph describe to his brothers and his father? Why? What are the implications of these dreams? Are they prophetic?
- Later on in our story, we learn that Joseph’s dreams would come true. How do Joseph’s dreams come true in his life and his brother’s lives?
- Verses 12-20 give the account of Joseph being sold into slavery by his brothers. Why did they hate Joseph even more than before? What are we told about Joseph’s dreams in verse 20? What does this mean? Why is it significant? What were the brothers attempting to stop?
- Although the brothers wanted to kill Joseph, one of the brothers insisted that they throw him into a pit. What happens after this? What does this tell us about the cold-heartedness of his brothers? What do they report to their father about Joseph?
