History Session 11: Isaac and Rebekah

 Genesis 24:27: “As for me, the Lord has led me in the way to the house of my master’s kinsmen.”

[Read Genesis 24] 

  1. Do you believe that everything happens for a reason? Why? Do you believe in coincidence? What does coincidence mean? [Read: Luke 12:7; Matthew 10:29; Acts 1:26; Isaiah 46:9-11; Proverbs 16:33; 19:21; John 10:3-5]
  2. Our story begins with Abraham instructing his servant to go and find a wife for Isaac. Why did Abraham instruct his servant to go to the city of Nahor? Why doesn’t Abraham want Isaac to take a wife from the land of Canaan? Why does he want Isaac to marry someone from his homeland?
  3. Upon reaching Mesopotamia, what does the servant do? Where does he stop? Who does he meet immediately after praying to the Lord for His guidance?
  4. After meeting Rebekah, what does Abraham’s servant learn about her character? What does he give her for her hospitality? Why?
  5. After meeting Rebekah, Abraham’s servant praises the Lord. What does he pray? (v.26-27) What do we learn about Abraham’s servant here?
  6. What might we learn from Abraham’s servant about following God’s leading? What does he mean when he says, “The Lord has led me in the way”? (V.27)
  7. How do we know when God is guiding our steps in life? How does this story apply to our lives?
  8. What happens next in our story as Rebekah goes and shares with her family what has happened at the well? What does Abraham’s servant share with the family? (v.34-39) 
  9. What was Abraham’s servant’s perspective on God’s will and guidance in his life? What was his perspective on coincidence? 
  10. How might this text help you grow in faith and understanding of God’s will for your life?
  11. Who in your life might need encouragement as they navigate a difficult season or difficult decisions they have before them? How can you encourage them with this lesson?
