What Would Jesus Say Session 22: The Golden Rule

Matthew 7:12 — “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” 

 

[Read Matthew 7:12-14] 

  1. Do you remember who taught you the Golden Rule? Did you know that the Golden Rule predates the days of Jesus? [We have record of a similar saying in Jewish literature]
  2. What does this rule imply? What does it mean? What does Jesus mean here?
  3. Do we follow the Golden Rule? What would the world look like if it were followed?
  4. Jesus tells us that the Golden Rule sums up the Law and the Prophets. How so? What is Jesus referring to when he uses the term Law here? What does He mean by Prophets?
  5. What does Matthew 22:37-40 tell us? What does this have to do with Jesus’ teaching here in Matthew 7:12?
  6. What do we learn about the Old Testament Law and the Prophets in Luke 24:13-35? What does this have to do with Jesus’ teaching here in Matthew 7:12?
  7. In view of God’s love and generosity towards us, in what manner are we to treat one another?
  8. How is the Golden Rule a picture of the way God treats us?
  9. How should we apply this to our lives?
