What Would Jesus Say Session 3: Blessed Are The Meek

Matthew 5:5 — “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Read Matthew 5:1-4

  1. The term ‘meek’ literally means ‘mild’ or ‘gentle’. How does this shape the way you might understand its meaning? 
  2. What examples would you give if you were to describe meekness as a character trait?
  3. How did Jesus characterize himself in Matthew 11:29? What did he say?
  4. Jesus was the best example of meekness. What do we learn about meekness from Jesus in John 18:28-40? How did Jesus handle his trial? How did he handle his suffering and crucifixion? What does this show us about true meekness?
  5. In Luke 20:19-26, Jesus is confronted by the religious leaders about a healing of a man born blind. How does Jesus show us true meekness amidst the opposition he faced from the religious leaders?  
  6. In Matthew 19:13-15, the disciples rebuke the people for bringing their children to Jesus. What was Jesus response to His disciples? How does he display meekness here?
  7. Why is meekness important? Why do we need to be an example to our world in this? 
  8. What does Jesus mean when he says, the meek will inherit the earth? What is this a reference to? Why is this important to understand?
