Planted Session 12: Leaving the Elementary
Hebrews 6:1 — “Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity.
[Read Hebrews 6:1-6]
- What do you remember about elementary school? If you are a parent with an elementary student, what are the blessings and challenges of this season for your family? Why might you be looking forward to your children growing up and maturing?
- We are instructed in Hebrews 6:1 to leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity. What does this mean?
- What elementary teachings does the writer of Hebrews refer to in verses 1-2? Do your best to define each of these topics. Why do you suppose the Hebrew church needed to move on from these elementary teachings?
- What warning is the church given in verses 4-6? What questions come to your mind when you consider what is being said in these verses?
- What is the context of these verses?
- What does it mean to say those who have ‘tasted’ of the heavenly gift and shared in the Holy Spirit, and ‘tasted’ the goodness of the Word of God? (v.4) It is beneficial to both define this term and to understand that it is used earlier in this letter in Hebrews 2:9. What is the context of Hebrews 2:9? What does this tell us about the term and how it is used in Chapter 6:4?
- What does it mean that it is ‘impossible to be restored to repentance’? [It’s important to understand that the writer is not implying that the Hebrew church had already done this, but instead was giving a warning of what is ahead if they continue on the path they are currently going. Further, the text is not a license for us to make judgment about the salvation of another brother or sister in Christ. Instead, we are to both heed the warning for it was written for a purpose and grow in our understanding of the importance of assurance of salvation.]
- What is assurance of salvation? Why is it critically important to understand as a believer in Christ? What does Romans 8 tell us about the love of Christ? How does this assure you of God’s love toward you?
