Planted Session 10: God Loves Generosity
Sermon Text: 2 Corinthians 9:6–8 (ESV)
6The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
Discuss:
- Why does God bless us abundantly? (vv. 8, 10–14, 15)
- How has God been abundantly blessing you? (list specifics)
- What might God want to do through your specific blessings? (vv. 8, 11)
- How does 2 Corinthians 9:7 challenge or encourage you?
- How does 2 Corinthians 9:8 comfort you when you feel like you don’t have enough resources (strength, money, time, skills, etc…) to do what God wants you do to? How does the sufficiency of Christ free you to be open-handed in tight seasons?
- What helps you seek joy in Christ when you are giving?
- How can we ensure our giving flows from union with Christ, not from trying to establish our own righteousness?
- How does Gospel-shaped generosity produce thanksgiving to God (vv. 11–12)? Share a story of giving that led someone to praise Christ, not the giver.
- Paul highlights the horizontal and vertical fruits of giving: needs met and God glorified (vv. 12–13). Where might our church or community need to recalibrate toward both outcomes?
- “Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!” (v. 15). How does contemplating the cross and resurrection specifically reframe your budget, lifestyle, and margin for generosity?
- What next faithful step—simple, concrete, and sacrificial—could you take this week as an expression of a cheerful heart to God? Who will you invite to pray with you for cheerful obedience?
