History Session 19: The Family Reunited

 

Genesis 45:5 – “And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.

[Read Genesis 42-45]

  1. What circumstances led to Joseph and his family being reunited? What circumstances led Joseph to a place of prominence and governance in Egypt? 
  2. In what specific ways do you see Joseph showing mercy or grace to his brothers in our story, despite testing his brothers?
  3. In Genesis 42:21-22, we begin to see remorse and conviction for what the brothers did to Joseph. What do Romans 8:1 and John 14:15-17 teach us about the conviction of the Holy Spirit? Why is this important to understand?
  4. How do you think you would have handled the situation that Joseph was in? In what ways did Joseph model Christ-like love in Chapters 42-45? 
  5. How do we see God’s providence in this story? What does our story teach us about God’s sovereignty and our place in His perfect plan? How does this challenge you?
  6. What happens between Joseph and his brothers in Genesis 45:1-8? 
  7. What is Joseph’s response to the brothers when they come near to him in Genesis 45:5,8? What does his response tell us about Joseph’s faith and trust in the Lord?
  8. Why is their reconciliation so encouraging to us? The power of forgiveness and healing cannot be understated. How is it essential to the Christian life?
