History Session 16: The Earth is the Lord’s

Psalm 24:1 — The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.”

[Read Psalm 24]

  1. Psalm 24 is a declaration of God’s eternal presence, sovereignty, and glory. Why is it important to be reminded of God’s all-encompassing, forever glory?
  2. Many scholars believe that King David wrote it for the processional celebration of the Ark of the Covenant coming into Jerusalem. What does 2 Samuel 6:1-19 tell us?
  3. What does Psalm 24:1 tell us about the earth and everything in it? Why are we constantly tempted to believe that what we have is ours?
  4. If all things are ultimately God’s, then how are we to steward what we have been given? How should this shape the way we live our lives? How should this shape the way we worship God?
  5. In verse 3, King David asks two questions. How does he answer these questions in verses 4-6? Who is worthy to stand before God in His presence?
  6. In verses 7-10, we are given a picture of an ancient tradition where a king would enter the city and be gloriously welcomed by the people. What is being declared here in these verses about our sovereign and glorious God?
  7. Many scholars believe that this Psalm is also a prophetic declaration of what is to come when Jesus returns, as He triumphantly enters Jerusalem in His Second Coming. What picture are we given, in verses 7-10, of Christ’s return? How should this encourage us, as we await His advent? How might this shape your understanding of the end times?
