History Session 8: Worthy to Be Trusted

Genesis 15:6: “And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.”

[Read Genesis 15:1–6]

  1. Read Genesis 15:1-6 and compare God’s promises to Abraham from Genesis 12:1-3. What is more specific in chapter 15? What bigger purposes are revealed in chapter 12?
  2. How did God encourage Abraham in his seemingly impossible situation? If you were Abraham, would you rather have the son that was promised right away, or the word of the Lord given in Gen. 15:4-5? Why might God have made Abraham wait even longer for the fulfillment of the promise?
  3. What is significant about Genesis 15:6 in light of Abraham’s response to God’s word? Even in this point of the Bible’s storyline, are people saved be their works or by faith? Why?
  4. Click here to read through this list of promises. Circle one or two that grab your attention. (or find another promise from the Bible!)
  5. What are some promises of God that are precious to you? Why?
  6. What are some promises that have been taken out of context and distorted to mean something that God did not promise? How might you be tempted to do this too?
  7. What might be some safeguards that you could use to ensure you’re are understanding God’s promise and applying it appropriately? Who can help you appropriately apply God’s promises?
  8. What gives you confidence that God will fulfill His promise to you? Are there other Bible verses or past experiences you can look to when you are feeling less confident?
  9. Discuss together what it means for Jesus to secure God’s promises for you. (see Romans 8:32)
  10. What does saying “Yes” to God’s promises look like for you? (see 2 Corinthians 1:20)
  11. What promise from God will you cling to this week? How will you practically say “Yes” to this promise?
  12. Spend some time praying God’s promises over each other. For example, convert the promise in Isaiah 26:3 to a prayer like the following: “God please help Suzzie to trust in You and fulfill your promise to give her perfect peace.”
