Genesis 22:17-18: “I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” 

[Read Genesis 22:1-19]

  1. Our story begins with God testing Abraham. What does God ask of Abraham and Isaac? Why? What level of obedience does God call His people to? Why might God test Abraham with the blessing that He promised? [Hint: God desires a relationship with His own. God desires that we love Him and not just the things He has blessed us with.]
  2. Genesis 22 is filled with foreshadowing of what is to come when God sends His Son Jesus to die for the sins of the world. What does John 3:16 tell us? What connections or cross references do you see from John 3:16 to Genesis 22:2-4?
  3. ”What does Isaac say (v.7) to his father Abraham about the preparations of the sacrifice? Why does he ask this? What is the significance of Abraham’s answer to Isaac?
  4. What does God say to Abraham while he is about to sacrifice Isaac? What is the significance of His statement?
  5. In our story, we are given a picture of what obedience looks like for Abraham. What stands out to you about Abraham’s obedience in this story? Why?
  6. We see in verse 8 that Abraham believes God would provide a sacrifice. What does this say about true obedience? Is there something in your life that you are trusting God for? Do you believe God will come through for you? Why or why not?
  7. We see evidence of Abraham’s willingness and obedience to God in verses 1, and 11. What is Abraham’s response to God when He calls him? What does this say about true obedience to God? Why might we struggle with a willingness to obey God in our lives?
  8. Because Abraham obeyed God’s voice He tells him, “Now I know that you fear the Lord”. What does this mean? What does this say about obedience to God?
  9. We also learn in verse 12 that true obedience is not half-hearted obedience. Why do you think this is true? Why does God call His people to whole-hearted obedience? Why does obedience matter?
