Genesis 6:9: “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.”

[Read Genesis 6-7] 

  1. According to Genesis 6:5, what was the condition of the world in Noah’s day? What does it mean that people’s intentions were only evil continuously?  
  2. In Genesis 6:6, we are told that God regretted making mankind. If God is perfect and holy, what does this likely mean? What does it say at the end of verse 6? How does this help us answer the question?  
  3. In verse 7, we are told that God desired to “blot out man from the earth”. Why do you think God is looking to start over with creation? What do you believe God’s intentions were? Why is this important to understand? 
  4. According to Genesis 6:11, the world had become increasingly violent. Why is justice and punishment necessary for this kind of sin? Do you see God’s grace in punishing violence? Why?  
  5. In verses 8-9, we are introduced to Noah. What does it say about Noah’s character? What does it mean that Noah was blameless in his generation? How might God look upon your generation? How might God perceive our culture today?  
  6. What promise does God make to Noah in verse 18? What does it mean that God would make a covenant with Noah? What were the details of the covenant? What are we told in verse 22? 
  7. According to verses 22-24, how devastating was the flood? Why do you believe we are given this detail in Genesis? Why is this important to the story in regards to God’s judgement and cleansing of the land? 
  8. What does the flood story tell us about God and what He did to save humankind?
