Genesis 2:4: “This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.”
Hebrew scripture often gives an overview of a topic and then goes over it again in more detail. In chapter two we see more detail of what God created in chapter one.
[Read Genesis 2:4-25]
- In the detail of this further description of creation, take time to think about and list the details that God made. Look for the verbs that describe God’s work of creation.
- All that God made; the garden, the wildlife, and the people, existed before sin came into the world. What does that mean or what does that say about everything in this chapter?
- These verses describe the Garden of Eden. The water is a central part of the life that God had made. What do you notice about the description of the water given in this text? How does that parallel the statement Jesus made when he said, “I am the living water?”
- Verse 7 says that God formed man and verse 22 God made women from Adam’s rib. How does God’s personal handiwork compare to chapter 1 where God spoke things into existence?
- God gives man a specific role in verse 15. How does that role of work and care relate to our lives, our purpose, and our responsibilities today? You could also look at Genesis 1:28 and 2:19 to see God’s instruction to mankind.
- In verse 2:18 God decides to make a helper suitable for man. “Helper” is one who supplies strength in the area that is lacking. It does not imply that the helper is either stronger or weaker. “Suitable for him” refers to someone who complements him. In what ways do men and women help one another or complement one another? What ways are we gifts to one another?
- There are several themes that begin here and flow through scripture. One is the garden as a sacred place where God dwells with man. How do you see that theme in scripture?
- How do we fulfill our purpose of caring for creation, or being fruitful and multiplying?
- How about the theme of marriage? Revelation 19:6-9, Matthew 22:1-3
- How has Jesus made it possible for the perfection of creation to be made a reality again?
