Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
[Read Genesis 1:1-2:3; Psalm 19:1-4]
- What does it mean and what is implied in the Bible’s first verse and first statement, “In the beginning God”?
- What does the first verse tell us about God? Why is this important? What does it tell us about the universe and the earth or land?
- What does Psalm 19:1-4 tell us about God and His existence? How do we know God exists? How do we know God created? How is it revealed to us?
- In Genesis 1:2, we are told the earth was without form and void. What does this mean? The Hebrew term for each of these words could be translated as “empty” and “chaotic”. What does that tell you about the state of ‘nothingness’ before God created all things?
- What does it mean that God’s Spirit was ‘hovering over the face of the waters’? The term Spirit comes from the Hebrew word ‘ruwach’ which could be translated as ‘wind’ or ‘breath’. What does this tell us about God and His creation? What does this tell us about the word of God? How does this connect to verse 3?
- What did God create in the 6 days of creation? (Outline the text) How did God order His creation? In what ways do we see this order today? What stands out to you in the text?
- What did God do on the 7th day? Why is this significant?
- What does the account tell us about our existence? Why is this important to consider? Why do you suppose the world seems to reject the Genesis account of creation?
- Do you see the gospel in the creation account? Where? What other themes do you see in the creation account that continue throughout the Bible?
